Head Shops: Coming To A Neighborhood Near You

The stores that sell bongs, pipes, papers and other products related to the cannabis culture are becoming ubiquitous throughout American society. Even with some states and localities putting pressure on stores through various licensing provisions and revenue-percentage thresholds, these stores are fast becoming as common as check-cashing stores and fast-food chains. With the expansion of dispensaries (which can also sell bongs and pipes), head shops comprise an important segment of the economy. Continue reading

The Government’s Point Of View

On the surface, one would guess that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency takes a rather humorless view of drug paraphernalia, and in this case looks are not deceiving. Uncle Sam doesn’t approve of Schedule I narcotics being used by Americans, and as long as cannabis remains on that list, they will approach it the same way they do cocaine, heroin, hashish, methamphetamine and LSD. It’s hard to find many logical people who can defend marijuana’s place on such a list. Continue reading

Bong Etiquette

Believe it or not, there are established protocols involved in smoking marijuana through a bong. While there may not be any publications along the lines of Strunk and White’s Elements of Style to be had, there are universally accepted norms when it comes to the maintenance and use of bongs. It goes beyond the obvious rule of etiquette (or even basic decency) which is to keep a clean bong. Continue reading

Penalties for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

No serious person disputes the fact that America’s prisons and jails are bursting at the seams. Compared to other civilized countries, the rate of incarceration is alarming, and shows no signs of declining or even flattening out. A disturbing percentage of those in custody are serving time or awaiting trial for drug-related offenses. Continue reading

Medical Marijuana: Unanswered Questions

The push for medical marijuana has gained momentum in recent years, although California and Arizona first passed voter-approved ballot initiatives all the way back in 1996. Only now – after the Obama administration promised there would be no federal recriminations against physicians who prescribe pot – have the dispensaries sprouted up, providing people with access to marijuana, literature, papers, bongs and pipes. In 16 states, patients can legally purchase and use cannabis as a means of relieving their medical conditions. Continue reading

Marijuana: A Media Unto Itself

Now more than ever, the American drug counter-culture prides itself on being informed and networked. The printing industry might as well be running hemp paper through their presses, because a good portion of their trade stems from those who enjoy (and want to share their knowledge of) marijuana. All forms of materials are distributed as the cannabis culture seeks to make its case – stickers, brochures, magazines, books, all manner of printed media. Continue reading

The Australian Bong Ban

In 2007, authorities in Australia became quite concerned about strains of “super dope” – an extremely potent brand of cannabis introduced and cultivated by Vietnamese immigrants, who learned the indoor-growing techniques from those who perfected the art of hydroponics in Canada. In a hysterical editorial, the Melbourne Herald-Sun described this “new” marijuana as “highly addictive”. This was a natural outgrowth of Australia’s dalliance of late with far-right conservatism. Continue reading

Keeping It Clean

It doesn’t take long for a new bong to change its appearance. What was once a clear, glittering jewel can quickly become a beaker full of sludge. It’s the nature of the beast, and the gunk that the bong collects is thought to be the gunk that doesn’t get into one’s respiratory system. While head shops offer an array of pricey products that they say will restore a bong to its original condition, any number of household items and chemicals will do the trick nicely. Continue reading

Big Things, Small Packages

When one thinks of a bong, one usually pictures something tall and garish with lights and tubes and glass and steel, practically stolen from the set of a sci-fi movie. This is what pop culture presents to the interested public, so that’s what we get. While such colossal devices are popular, they are not the only game in town – merely the biggest. Continue reading

What Is The Healthiest Way To Get High ?

There is a debate that rages among marijuana smokers about which is the healthiest way to smoke weed? It is generally believed that smoking a joint is the least healthy way to go about it, pipes offer the advantage of not having to smoke the paper used to roll the joint(which might contain chemicals) and bongs are an even healthier alternative due to its use of water as a filter. That being said, there is nothing healthier than a vaporizer. Continue reading
