The latest (or at least the most fashionable) product to hit the paraphernalia market is the vaporizer. The basic idea of a vaporizer is to extract the herbal essence from plant matter through aerosolization, which can be achieved at temperatures that fall well short of those required for combustion. Whether or not this produces a “better” high would have to be a matter of opinion. The fact that the vaporizer is a cleaner, healthier, more efficient device is a matter of fact.

Making Contact

The most common type of vaporizer is the conduction vaporizer. To achieve heat conduction, an electric heat element is affixed to a bowl, in which the plant matter is placed, that is mounted inside of a cylinder. This is all sealed inside a glass vacuum (like an upside-down fish bowl) with a draw-tube attached to the bottom of the cylinder. The vapor that is released is clean and free of tar or carcinogens.

A Healthy Alternative To Smoke

People who live active lifestyles yet still partake in marijuana say there is a big difference between smoking pot and vaporizing it. In particular, they describe cardiovascular performance as being down for a few days after smoking marijuana, but report no such diminished capacity after having used a vaporizer instead of papers, a pipe or a bong. Another plus for vaporizers is that they tend to be cleaner than a bong or a pipe. They don’t require water and they don’t leave any ashes behind.

The only downside is that the absent minded smoker – or, rather, vaporizer – can forget that he or she has turned on the unit. If one doesn’t pay attention, one can easily miss out on a bowlful that disappears, literally, into thin air.
